| noisy all tube system | eliot Aug 14, 2002 1:17 PM | | I have an all tube system ( including a tube CJ DAC). It's always been just fine, until recently, when it began making a racket upon turning up the preamplifier (also CJ) volume control ( before playing any input material). The noise is the kind of static type noise that I usually associate with dust in the volume control on a cheap radio. The noise is only heard from the right speaker, however. Once the volume level is set, the noise stops, and the system appears to be alright( although it appears to be just a little bit light on the right side). Do you think the problem is in fact dust, or could it be a tube in either the DAC or the preamp? |

The noise appears only when the CD player is the source (and recall only when actually turning up the volume on the preamp from its zero setting). When the turntable is the source, which is to say that the phono signal is EITHER through one of the Tape-In inputs or the Phono-Input ,there is no noise when turning up the volume on the preamp. My next step, now that I'm thinking about it a bit more, is to send the CD signal to one of the Tape- In inputs( instead of to the CD input) on the preamp and see if the problem persists. What do you think? I'm not really too good at this diagnostic sort of thing. I mean , if the problem persists through the Tape -In, is the problem with the CD player or the preamp? I'm beginning to think that it has to be in that part of the preamp having to do with CD Input. Eliot |
