| How do I test tubes? | musbdeaf Sep 5, 2002 6:32 PM | | I have an old motorola unit in need of some tube refurbishing. Does Radio shack still have tube testers or am I going to have to it some other way? Are some brands of tubes better than others? What do I look for? Also where to buy? Thanks in advance! |

Now you'll have to find someone with a tube tester, or find one of your own. I found mine at an estate sale - four bucks! An electronics repair shop which has been in business a long time would be better than Radio Shaft, I think...

You'd rarely see somebody come in with one or more tubes to test. They would be pouring through the attached technical guide looking to see which socket to plug in to and what switch settings to select before pushing the magic test button. Today, they are all gone. I really don't know where you'd go. I'd stay away from tubes made in china. I don't think that their quality control is too good. I think some of the better ones are made in serbia and russia. I don't think American companies like ge, rca, or sylvania have made vacuum tubes in decades. This is very old technology by electronics standards. |
