| Seeking advice on Magnepan MMG and Jolida 102 or 202 pairing | Rush Power Windows Sep 27, 2002 7:33 AM | | I have Magnepan MMG's in a small bedroom setup, presently hooked up to an older classic Pioneer SX-780 40wpc receiver from 1978. It sounds real good, but I want to 'go tubes', since I am very enamored of my dad's Fisher 500C unit (very liquid and natural sound- must be those Telefunken tubes).
I listen to all kinds of music, with an emphasis on acoustic/latin/neo flamenco guitar, jazz, and vocals. Would the Jolida JD102B or the JD202A have sufficient power to drive the 4 ohm MMG's? I was originally looking at the Decware SE-84C Zen Triode or the SE84-CS, but I don't believe they will have enough drive to play my MMG's even at moderate volume (which is what I prefer). Also, will I miss 'tone controls', given I usually crank up the treble, and boost the bass controls a bit? Your input is appreciated! |

The 102B would work for a bedroom system but could run out of juice prematurely if you wanted high volumes. The 202A (and above) has been pair with these speakers by many people with very satisfying results.
Tone controls? Depending on just how exagerated you want the frequency extreames would determine this. Not too many people these days consider tone controls.
Another very popular option with the MMG's is the Jolida Hybrids. These amps have the solid state power these speakers like for more control and authority while maintaining a seductive midrange and upper end due to the tube input section.
good luck and happy listening with whatever you decide.
