Kinda new around here but here goes. Got a ST-70 on the way (ebay) that is original unmodified 1970 model. Will put my DBX BX3 amp (LOUD AND CLEAR!) on the shelf temporarily. Will buy a 2nd ST-70 as soon as the opportunity presents itself. I heard a tube setup at a friends house and figured I had to try it. I have heard about modifications and tube changes that helps the sound immensely. Is this expensive but worth it or expensive not worth it or what. Who does this type of stuff. Will be used in conjuction with my CX-3 preamp, DX5 cd player, 224 type II noise reduction, 2015 eq all DBX, Teac X-1000rbl reel to reel(also have a marantz PRO CD player) and Klipsch Chorus speakers. Any input will be appreciated.

Lots of upgrades/mods one can do to a Stereo 70. First off is that it should be powered up with a variac. Ramp up power from 20 volts upward by 20 volts every two hours. Watch for signs of failure in caps before ramping up. Yes tubes make a difference, and before experimenting with new tubes I would recap the driver board (or replace with new upgraded or stock replacement found at Triode Electronics), replace filter caps underneath, another upgrade that most say is required is to replace the selenium rectifier with a diode. New tube sockets and resistors, rca's ect.....

Get the point...its endless...but alot of fun. Each upgrade will improve the sound 100% NOS Mullards El34's and RCA 7199's will improve the sound as well (stay away from aftermarket 7199's they are crap)!!!

Good Luck on a classic amp. With upgrades on the board, power supply and selenium rectifier you will have a great push/pull amp with top notch output iron.

That is if you have the good iron on it. What numbers are on those output transformers anway? Plastic or cloth leads? IF you don't have the right trans, I wouldn't sink any money into it myself. But that's just me!
