Question about Peerless driversThomas A
Jun 25, 2001 2:35 PM
Are all Peerless drivers 8 ohm or can one order drivers with 4 ohm spec? (I would need some new drivers, and my old ones are specified as 4 ohm.) Or is this only possible when ordering a lot of drivers like speaker manufacturers do?

Ask them via e-mail

Hej John,

I've been looking at there home page, and it appears that drivers can only be bought in standard 8 ohm, except when manufacturers order a lot (customer designed). I sent a mail, and hope they will answer.

Hejsan Thomas.

Have you been in contact with HiFi kit in Stockholm. They might have some customer designed drivers. I suspect you want a driver that isn´t 8 ohm :-) but I´m not sure. Are you constructing speakers?

Are you the same Thomas that asked me about the active filters on www.hifimagasinet.com perhaps?

Hej,

I've asked at Hifi Kit, but they did only have the standard midrange/bass driver (130 WR 26 72 PPB 8 ohm) while I must have the 4 ohm. My impression of the salesman at Hifi Kit was that I need to buy many drivers to get a customer designed one. I'll check again with Hifi Kit whether this is possible or not to special order a pair of these drivers in 4 ohm.

I am not constructing new speakers at the moment, just want to replace the drivers of my old ones. One of the drivers have been damaged by sun-light (I have fixed it with some glue but...). If, however, there is a possibility to get 4 ohm, I might build a new set of these (top speakers) to use as rear speakers in a HT setup (it's a pair of Mirsch Allegro NG8 speakers, with NG8B subs). In this way, there would be a tonal match between front and back.

Yes, it was me asking about the active filter, which I will use between the NG8 top speaker and the NG8B subs). I have not been in contact with Ingvar yet, but I will.

Peerless replied rather fast, and it was as I suspected. I need to order a minimun of 200 pieces of these drivers since they are no longer a standard stock unit.

From your post I'm not sure whether your old/existing woofer is a discontinued 4 ohm Peerless unit. You seem to be sure a 4 ohm replacement unit will match your enclosure. Aside the impedance problem, will other parameters of the driver match your old woofer?

Since a driver's impedance widely varies across its frequency range I would consider measuring your existing woofer's impedance curve to make sure it is a 4 ohm unit, and whether it is a highish or lowish 4 ohm. You can go on and measure its Thiele & Small parameters too. Of course it may be easier to replace both woofers and the crossover... (the tweeter may stay, as it is probably more sensitive than the woofer and probably will need a series padding resistor.)

Hi,

I am pretty sure that it's the one I want since I have the whole construction drawings of these speakers, including crossover design and the number of the woofer.

The answer from Peerless was this:

The 4 ohm version of 832592 is called 832591. This is no longer a standard unit, and we do no longer carry stock of these. So unfortunately we are not able to supply these unless we receive an order of min. 200 pcs.

My only option is to try contacting the constructor, although he is out of business (I think). If I am lucky he might have some drivers left, although it was ten years ago these speakers were designed.

Good idea. Contact Olle Mirsch.

I was lucky, very lucky. He had one component set left (mid + tweeter drivers and xover), which he was willing to sell (although it sounded as if he wanted to keep it for his own as spare parts).

Thomas I´m about to make a DBT on CD players. I wonder if you live near Stockholm, would you consider participate? If you would, send me an e-mail john@jrsaudio.se
It would take from a couple of hours to one day. In the beginning of September perhaps?

Thanks / John
