I just got these. They were my grandfathers. I do not know what time period they are from, how much they cost, or anything. Could anyone provide me with info on these speakers.

The L66 might be similar to the Lancer 66's which came out in about 1962. They are a 2 way bookshelf system with a 10" woofer and a direct radiator tweeter. They probably have the LE 10A woofer and the LE 20 tweeter and an LX2 crossover. This is a pretty decent 8 ohm system. ...pretty efficient for their size and the sound is ok for rock and pop but maybe a bit bright for todays tastes. Fortunately the LX2 has an adjustable HF level control which was necessary for that tweeter. They would be considered at the lower end of the JBL line but still a good speaker and worth having today. I think they cost somewhere around 150 bucks back then.

Here is a quote about the L100 which was the home version of the famous 4310 studio monitor and this might be a clue.
"If this is the one from the mid-70's, it has a CONE tweeter. This speaker was the quintessential "West Coast Sound"-loudspeaker, with punchy bass and a prominent midrange that sounded very impressive on stuff like Yes. JBL also sold a similar two-way called the L66. You could then buy the midrange and install it to result in the functional equivalent to an L100. This should give you a hint about the woofer crossover--there isn't any! JBL ran this big cone full range to maximize efficiency and damping factor and to hell with the midrange breakup! As you point out, they are very efficient. But the midrange forwardness, peaky tweeter, and rolled extreme HF are factors that you'll have to deal with, hopefully with a synergistic amp match. "

The speakers were L88'S not the L66robh3606

Where ever you got that it is not correct. The 2 way you could add the midrange too was the L88 Plus. I have a pair of them not the L66. Also wrong tweeter. The L88Plus used the LE-25 not the LE20 that was in the original L100. The L100A was upgraded to used the LE-25. Go to the www.audioheritage.org page to find information on the speakers.
Aren't the 88's also called the Nova's?Markw*

I almost bought a pair of 88's way back when for the upgradability. I was thinking the same thing as you when he said the 66s but since I didn't have proff handy, I figured I would say nothing.

FWIW, I wound up getting a pair of Lancers (L55s) for areal good price instead.

Yes there was a vesion called the NOVA but it did not offer the midrange upgrade and had a half wood front grill. Very nice looking speakers. You have to be carefull what version you get if you plan to put in the M12 expander kits to make them L100's
The speakers were L88'S not the L66estan

The only 66's that I personaly know are the Lancer 66's of which I described correctly. The quote aboute the L66's that I added was probably a misprint as I didn't write it but I found it in a search because as I said I only know the Lancers. I am very familiar with the L100's even though I never owned them I did own many variations of the 4310 and 4311's. So who knows about the L66's for this guy. If they are in fact Lancer 66's it is easy. LE10A's, LE20's and LX2's. Made in the early 60's...

On a plastic tab on the back they were labled as "type L 66". On a sticker they were labled Lancer 66. I believe that these speakers are Lancer 66's. Thank you for all your info. I currently have them hooked up to a Kenwood mini system and they sound quite good. The speakers are not quite good enough to make it into my main system, but they sound better than the speakers that came with the Kenwood. I believe the Kenwood is rated at 80 watts into 6 ohms. Thats probably being generous too, but the Kenwood does a decent job of powering them.

If anyone has any other interesting facts, statistics, or comments, by all means, let my know. Thanks again for all your help.

As I thought...Lancer 66's...
And now you have all the info. Not a whole lot to do here except do some internal bracing of the cabinets and make sure those LX2's are ok and don't need some work.
They are a nice vintage speaker especially as a gift.

As you may recall, I suggested on another board that you post your question here.

Didn't I tell you--these old farts know everything!

Good luck.
