Whch is a better tone arm?...DRP
Apr 14, 2001 10:50 AM
... A straight graphite low-mass one or an aluminum "S" shaped one. The latter is on a nice looking 1979 Marantz 6110. The low mass arm is on a cheaper looking pioneer from the early 1980's. The marantz looks higher quality but the specs on the pioneer are far better. A comparison of the two TT's would be fine but I'm mainly curious about the differences between their tone arms.

All things being equal, a lower mass arm is usually better, for music purposes (as opposed to DJ-ing where durability and a line of sight to the stylus are critical). However, it is critical that whatever tonearm is used is a good match for the cartridge in terms of the resonance frequencies. For example, a Shure V15 will want a low mass arm, but a Stanton 881 will want a medium mass s-shaped arm. Most of the moving coil cartridges will need low mass arms.

also just as important....the bearing, the damping factor, arm tube resonances engineering and construction quality are key issues and it is hard to even estimate which arm will be better. The SME arm which is a S shape is regarded as one of the finest in the world and the inexpensive low mass straight tube REGA also is held in high regard...that's that!
