Ah yes sports fans,
Six Cats! just returned from RI (visiting family) and returned to Maine with a Sansui QS 4 Channel QRX-7001 Receiver! I was able to buy said unit from my Brother-in-law. This unit is in very good condition being nice and clean and everything is working. I'd say that the unit is about 90-95% but not mint. That being said,I bought the Sansui for the price of $100.00 ! Yes! I have a very nice Brothe-in-law. I cleaned it up inside and out (was very clean inside). This puppy is F#&king heavy! The amp is MUCH bigger than my Pioneer SX737. I hooked it up to a small pair of mini bookshelfs and it sounds fine. Now I need to find four speakers, uhmmmmmm? Should be fun to play with quad sound.
A real blast from the past! Six Cats!

On a similar note, a couple of weeks ago, I picked up a Shure AVC20 on eBay for the grand total of $12 plus shipping (the shipping was $20 more). The guy who had it thought that it was broken, but the switches just needed de-gunking with tuner cleaner, and it works fine. The AVC20 is advertised as a Audio Video system expander, but it really is a VERY flexible Dolby Surround Sound Decoder and Integrated Amplifier. It's 30 Watts per 4 channels, or bridgeable 60 W x 2 with another front or rear channel amp. It actually came WITH the remote and the manual, which is a good thing, since the sucker is pretty much unique, with features I've never seen before. BTW, this thing is built like a tank, too. There are also jacks to use just the pre-amp or just the amp sections, so I can see that I might actually use the thing as a rear channel amp and surround decoder for the retro system I'm putting together with a Holman Pre-amp and McIntosh MC2120 Amp. This should be pretty interesting. I also used it to test my Holman Pre-amp and the Kenwood C-2 Audio Purist pre-amp that I got for my other McIntosh (an MC2100). (They're basically equivalent sounding except on phono inputs, where the Holman gets a slight edge in transparency.) This Shure decoder is great for A-B comparisons between other gear, since there are seperate Pre-amp/amp jacks for the identical front and rear amps. For $32 total, this is a pretty neat toy. The only reason I may NOT move this permanently into a system is that it may be TOO useful to pull off of my audio test bench. BTW, the sound quality of the Amp is outstanding, equal to other high quality solid state gear of similar power rating.

What are you gonna feed it?

Are you aware that there were several different 4 channel formats?

You will want to search out records encoded in the "QS" format and there were not too many of them. The big on'e was Columbias similar, but different, "SQ" format and there was also a discrete "CD-4" format which was entierly different and incompatable with either.

And, as far as speakers go, howsa bouts 4 little PSBs or Paradigms?

I had Tom Holman's original 4 channel decoder. It would decode the SQ format but it would also synthesize 4 channel from any record. Lots of fun... Hint...put the rear speakers not behind you but on the side walls kind of parallel to your head...maybe slightly behind for the best effect.

Six-o,
Congrats! You'll have some fun with that old girl!
For some fun, try running the front L&R, rear L&R outputs from a DVD player into the "discrete" 4-ch. inputs of your quad, then use the DVD player's internal dolby digital decoder and play some movies or music DVD's through the Sansui. As good as a new mid-fi H/T receiver! Just set up the internal DVD menu to center channel "off", and run a RCA jack from the DVD player to your sub directly (or set the menu to subwoofer "off", if you don't use a sub). Be sure, of course, to have 4 speakers.
If you really want to play with true quad sound, buy an old quad reel-to-reel deck, widely avail. on e-bay, and play some tapes you can also find on e-bay. You'll use the discrete inputs with the reel deck as well. A quad 8-track can also be used.
What a hilarious retro set-up!
Enjoy!
