| re: Aquired MARANTZ & SCOTT (dated 1959) tube gear - need in | estan Apr 16, 2001 9:41 AM | | one more thing...I think what you've got is a Marantz Model 1 preamp which is extremely rare but I need to know if it is stereo or mono before I can be sure....these were made until about 1957 or '58.

| It's Mono. - I opened it last night - very clean inside & out | TheRecordCollector Apr 17, 2001 5:40 PM | | But I still couldn't find any marking's indicating what model it is.

| You're right, it is a Marantz model 1 | TheRecordCollector Apr 17, 2001 5:53 PM | | I found a photo of one on ebay, only mine doesn't have the serial # sticker, nor does it say "Model 1"
I also don't have the power supply as pictured in the ebay photo.
But I opened it last night, it's beautiful inside & out!
(I was looking for a model number)

| You're right, it is a Marantz model 1 | estan Apr 21, 2001 11:49 PM | | Power supply is crucial for the proper Marantz sound. They are fairly easy to build if you want to get it working. You could use a solid state supply but I don't recommend it. That unit used tube rectifiers and that will also make a big difference in the sound.
Again you need 2 for stereo or just put it on your shelf as a very important piece of vintage hi end audio.

PS...I would look for another one if it was me with a working powersupply. Betcha you could easily power both units from the same supply |

The instabase data base is awesome when you get the hang of it.
