9090 Club Question...moondog
Apr 23, 2001 4:29 PM
OK Boys... I was doing some serious listening this past weeend & it occured to me that as a general rule... I only use about 1/4 of my 9090's power. 10 O'Clock is absolutely cranking in my 9 x 12 room. Do any of you guys actually find your's cranking past 12 O'Clock very often? I can't imagine & I've been playing in Rock-n-Roll bands for over 30 years! My first Sansui was a 7070 & it was almost perfect for my needs, but Ijust had to get the Big Dog. Maybe someday I'll have a huge room to let it soar in, but until then... 10 O'Clock is the Comfort Zone in my Groovy Little Hippy Pad.

Moon,

A friend of mine has a Sansui 9090db. When we crank it up, it goes up to about 11 o'clock, and very occasionally 12 o'clock, more than that is asking for our friends, the police to come over (and not precisely to listen to the music).

The fact that we crank it up more probably has to do with his speakers being very power hungry, he has a pair of Marantz HD-770's and to make them sing you have to feed them.

As for the sound of his setup:

Sansui 9090db
Marantz 5220 tape deck
Technics SL-D1 Turntable
Marantz HD-770 Speakers
Sony CD
Sony Minidisc

It sounds fantastic!! I spend a lot of time spinning vinyl there, drinkin' red wine, after the second bottle goes, we switch to CD's - LP's are rare and it would be no fun to wreck a record when our fine motor abilities are blunted by booze.

Christopher - I know what you mean... Oh So Well!

A buddy of mine & me have been known to rip it up pretty good on Saturday Nights up in the Hippy Pad. No cops yet, but........

Now for something completely different....

I've been meaning to ask you a question. For a few months now I've been promising to make some CD's of some audiophile stuff & assorted other things for some of the Old Frequent Flyers here. (Buzz, Beatle Fred, Christopher from Chile, etc...) If you're interested... email me your address & I'll put you on the list. If you'd like to give me an idea of what kind of music you REALLY enjoy, that would help also. My tastes are all over the board except for Rap & Commercial Country. I also plan on sending a copy of my CD to all who are interested.

Anyway... Let me know if you'd like to INDULGE?

Check your mail =)

As for the content of the CD, I'd rather leave it open, but if you want a few suggestions, could be some psyhodelia, trip hop or acid jazz. If you have some of YOUR music recorded that would be really cool.

I looked around for A Perfect Circle, no luck, I could send you (and everyone) something from these lattitudes, maybe brazilian (bossa nova) or some good music from Argentina, tell me.

Unfortunately I am only member of 8080 club but I concur the dial has never been past noon. Especially with the loudness switch on!! I could be evicted for anything past 10 o'clock really!! Would love to really test the parameters of this receiver in a VERY large listening area. By the way I am currently refurbishing SX-1980 and can't wait to listen to it. Do you guys listen to music with the Loudness button ON or OFF?ckelly

Buzz

I use the loudness when listening at low volumes, at higher volumes I like it LOUD without the loundess switch. It turns the Bass up much too high, veiling everything else.

Chris has got the right idea..
The loudness switch is made to comensate for the ears lack of sensitivity to bass and high treble when listening at low volumes.
Best to use your tone controls at high volumes to get the sound you like.

In fact, I tend not to like to use tone controls at all, as I find them only to "dirty up" the music you listen to.
I prefer other solutions to the problem which are more definite: proper speaker placement.

Buzz, I was also thinking, Could the speakers you have not go that low?

John

I have my controls flat (in the middle) all the time, as I think tone controls "colour" the sound. I don't use an eq, too much hassle. I guess it all has to do with what gear, shape/size of the room, etc. one has.

I wuz gonna take a nap but....

If you can get away with it Chris is right but sometimes a bit of EQ is necessary and the loudness control should only be used for very low level listening as in background music.
John if you were complaining about bright sound why are you turning up the treble?
