| Kenwood KA-5500 integrated amp, anyone? | Slosh Nov 16, 2002 1:24 PM | | A small electronics repair shop near me is selling this integrated amp (vgc) for a mere $55. It appears to be a quality unit with some heft (I'd guess around 20 lbs.), solid build (thick aluminum faceplate and heavy steel chassis), banana plug binding posts for both pairs of speakers, and of course, those cool backlit analog power meters ;-)
I actually don't have a use for it (I already have two nice systems) but for $55 maybe I should grab it anyway. Does anyone know anything about this piece? |
| re: Kenwood KA-5500 integrated amp, anyone? | Dave The Canuck Nov 18, 2002 4:22 PM | | That brings back memories. I bought one in 1976, trading in a 25-watt-per-channel Kenwood receiver that would distort loudly at any more than moderate volumes. The KA5500 had a big tranformer, big capacitors and 55 watts per channel. I never had any clipping problems with it. A friend sold me a newer KA6100 a few years later. I bought it because it had a dual power supply with four capacitors. Had the same cool meters. I sold it to another friend and it's still going strong. For $55 you can't go wrong, but I moved up to Harman Kardon integrated amp in 1986 and I think it was more musical. |
| Yeah, that's the problem. | Slosh Nov 18, 2002 6:23 PM | | I already have a very good sounding (IMO) Marantz PM-68 integrated (rated at 95 wpc rms into 8 ohms, 135 wpc rms into 4 ohms, 325(!) wpc peak into 2 ohms) in my living room and a little (but more than adequate) Pioneer Elite A-35R integrated (rated at 45 wpc rms into 8 ohms, 65 wpc rms into 4 ohms) in my bedroom. Both are fairly recent (1996 and 2001), thus are remote controlled which would be a little tough to give up. Both have decent phono stages as well so I really don't see any reason to get the Kenwood. In any case, thanks for the info. |
| Yeah, that's the problem. | Night Wolf Nov 19, 2002 9:17 AM | | buy it, then I'll send you $55 and you send it to me, then we can all be happy :)
actualy, the 5500 has pre-out/power in right? hmmmm actualy I think I'd like to do that, but I am sure it wont happen as there would be too much transaction going on. if anything, e-mail me at

thanks |
| I didn't check if it had pre/main ... | Slosh Nov 19, 2002 3:33 PM | | ...but I didn't notice any jumpers. I'll check later this week (it's only about a half mile from my house).
Wanna buy a Yamaha DSP-E492 three channel integrated amp/Pro-Logic processor (with two 5.1 channel analog inputs)? ;-) How about a Sony ES SDP-EP9ES Dolby Digital pre/pro? j/k but I really need to get rid of my old, unused gear |
| I didn't check if it had pre/main ... | Night Wolf Nov 22, 2002 11:54 PM | | Hey, actualy I just won another Kenwood KR-8010, so I am conpletly out of cash, sorry about that
why don't you put your stuff on ebay? |
| But it, then sell it to me........... | Response Dec 15, 2002 8:12 AM | | I just picked up a KA-6100 and several veintage tuners from Marantz, Kenwood, AKAI, JVC, etc. I hove something for the vintage stuff from the mid to late 70's and looking for more. I have my vintage system running into a pair of original Dynaco A-25 speakers.
Not an audiophile system but very pleasurable to listen to.
Being a dealer for higher end audio gear, my family and friends are a bit suprised to see vintage equipment sitting around my home listening room.
Too bad there were no CD players from that era to match the set-up. Hmmmmmm? For now, my Music Hall CD25 is a good match as is my Jolida JD100 but not justified in a vintage system.
For $35 bucks, I would pick it up. I would seriously consider giving you more than that (not too much more) for it if it was in decent cosmetic and working condition. Or you could always "ebay" it. I am also always interested in the vintage tuners mentioned above plus those by Pioneer, Allied, Sansui and more.
Email me at Response34@aol.com if you decide to pick it up.
Happy Listening. |
