| :update: Anyone actualy run a vintage system? | Night Wolf Feb 10, 2003 3:02 PM | | Hello everyone, this is just like my thread at the bottom of the vintage room, but that is burried, and my system has really changed, I am sure some of your systems have changes also, so here is the updated version.
Receiver= Sansui G-7700
cdp= Nakamichi CD Plyaer2 Limited
turn table= BSR 810 w/ Shure cart.
speakers= modified JBL L100
there is alot of differnt configurations I can do with my system, one of the major things being bi-amping, I was once running 2 Kenwood KR-8010's then my Sansui G-7700 and 1 KR-8010, but now decided that the Sansui is plenty (and sounds better then the Kenwood) so I am trying to sell my gear I am not using, and buy the $350 PartsExpress subwoofer kit. the stands I use are the $100 (although now on sale for $90) high mass stands from PE, they are very nice, cast iron and steel, sand fillable, nice textured black finish w/ brass end caps.
here is a picture I just took ofmy system. (you can't really see the new Vifa tweeters in this picture) |
| Are those KLH speakers... | Jimmy C Feb 11, 2003 4:44 AM | | ...on the shelf? They look a lot like what my dad purchased back in 1970ish. He had them hooked up to a Realistic STA-65C receiver (which I still have) and a top-loading tape deck.
I would like to get into the vintage stuff a little more. I want to build the exact rig I had over 20 years ago... not exactly vintage, but old enough to bring back fond memories. I already found a perfect, boxed Realistic LAB-440 table that I had. My exact receiver and a pair of Boston A-70s still elude me...
Also, how do you like the P.E. sub? I have heard great things about it... I would be willing to bet it competes with pricier units.
Have fun! |
| Happy is he who has KLH model 6 speakers... | skeptic Feb 12, 2003 10:56 AM | | Me too.
Those are model 6 aren't they.
They sure look like model 6 to me. |
| Are those KLH speakers... | Night Wolf Feb 12, 2003 1:45 PM | | no, they are not 6's, they are 17's which are bascialy the same thing, in fact I think the drivers were the same, only differnce was the 6 had a bigger cabinate= more bass and the crossover was differnt (17=1.5khz 6=1khz)
they are very nice speakers, I got them for $30/pair at the Salcation Army, kinda rough cosmeticaly, but that is ok, perhaps the one thing I don't like about my pair (and why I am slow to bother refinishing them like my L100's) is the fact that they are not the origanal pair.
I don't have the PE sub yet, I was saying when I sell off the gear I don't use, I want to get one.
and about that system you want, if you know the model numbers, check ebay, there are always things on there |
| I do the eBay thing all the time... | Jimmy C Feb 12, 2003 5:15 PM | | ... you are correct, one can find anything. I'm simply waiting for mint, boxed or n.o.s. stuff. The receiver was the STA-110... no great shakes, but that's what I had at the time - AutoMagic tuning and all! Don't forget about the powerhouse 22 WPC... actually, it was quite loud with the Boston speakers.
There is a nice pair of the Boston A-400s on eBay right now... look pretty good (original box included!) If I only had the extra funds and the room to store them!
Fun stuff indeed... |
| I do the eBay thing all the time... | Night Wolf Feb 13, 2003 2:00 PM | | well, your not going to find a NOS vintage receiver, and if you do, that's alotta money, just as long as it's mint, you should be fine. |
| Are those KLH speakers... | skeptic Feb 13, 2003 7:50 AM | | KLH 17 and 6 are two speakers I'm fairly familiar with. The six had a larger woofer and a larger cabint. It also had slightly better bass. Both shared the same tweeter and had a very similar sound. The 6 was also considerably more expensive than the 17 $135ea vs $79 ea. Both were considered outstanding performers in their day and in fact the 6 had a very long production life from about 1958 to 1972. |
|  Are those KLH speakers... | Night Wolf Feb 13, 2003 2:18 PM | | yeah, your right, the 6 did have a 12" woofer, my 17's have a 10"
yeah, back in the 60's, these KLH's were the thing to own, what is cool, is I own 2 vintage pairs of speakers, the West cost sound, and the New England sound :D
I really like the 17's, surely they don't compare to my JBL L100's, but c'mon, it's the L100's were talkin' about :D but for their size, and price today, I would choose them over many of the bookshelf speakers sold today, and if you want more bass, add a sub (although the bass is very well controled and accurate) only thing, is the 17's (or any vintage KLH for that matter) are not a party speaker, can't go around cranking the hell outta them (but I do with the L100's) but they were not deisgned for that use either, so as long as you use them within their range, your set.
like I mentioned, my pair isn't the origanal pair, the back metal plate is differnt (when KLH moved I guess) the front grill pattern is differnt, the drivers are the same, but 1 has a foam that insaltes the tweeter (which falls apart when you touch it) and the other has a white plastic, both are pretty rough cosmeticaly, with 1 being worse. and if they looked half as good in person then in the picture, I would be happy.
that is the only thing keeping me from refinishing them (because they are not the origanal pair) but I love the sound.
see, at the Salvation army, there were 2 pairs of 17's there, and when I went there, the person siad, oh, just last week I sold another pair, so I think some gready person took the best 2 they saw, not knowing they were a mixed pair, I wouldn't care of the cosmetic shape, becuase I can fix that, I just wanted a origanal pair. oh well, $30 and I am not arguing :D |
| Are those KLH speakers... | sam46 Feb 14, 2003 4:50 PM | | I see a guy at the local flea market every weekend that has a pair of KLH speakers that look like that, he wants $25 and never seems to sell them. One grill is missing, and from the looks of the remaining glue, it did not come off easy. He says he has the grill at home, but never seems to show up with it. I have considered them a few times, but there are three binding posts on the back and I am not sure how to hook them up to test them, and he doesn't know either..anyone know about these posts? thanks |
| Are those KLH speakers... | skeptic Feb 14, 2003 7:19 PM | | The left post is for the amplifier minus. The two right posts are for the woofer plus and the tweeter plus. Originally there should have been a link. They were among the first speakers that were "biamplifiable but I don't know anybody who did. All you need is a short length of wire to jumper the two together. Because the woofer surrounds were made of treated cloth insead of foam, they usually didn't rot the way most other manufacturers' speakers did. Good luck. |
| Are those KLH speakers... | Night Wolf Feb 14, 2003 9:20 PM | | if they look like my 17's but have 3 binding posts, then they are the 6, if that is the case, and they are $25 BUY THEM!!!!!!!!!! just buy them as-is, if your really cheap, tell him you'll give in $20 for them
the grills come off pretty easy, on my 17's (same setup as the 6 also) just unscrew the KLH badge, then the grill is only held on by velcrow, so just find a way to pull it off.
really though, $25 for a pair of 6's is GREAT they go for $80+ on ebay
hey I spent $30 on my 17's which is cheap, kinda rough comsmeticaly, and not the origanal pair (the one thing I don't like, although not their fault) but sound amazing (for what they are- 2-way 10" woofer, acoustic sspension, alot better then any cheap to modeatly priced bookself speaker today) and I wouldn't even think twice about buying a second pair if givin the chance.
really, do yourself the favor and buy them.....before someone else does |
| Are those KLH speakers... | sam46 Feb 15, 2003 4:50 PM | | Thanks for the info, I will check them out, when it warms up enough for the flea market again. Too friggin cold this weekend for anyone to be there. |
| just got the receiver I have been wanting for a looooong time | Night Wolf Feb 14, 2003 9:22 PM | | I just won a Sansui 9090DB on ebay for a nice price. these things are amazing, and I can't wait until it arrives, I am so happy over the purchess |
| re: :update: Anyone actualy run a vintage system? | agtpunx40 Mar 18, 2003 10:54 PM | | hey nightwolf, what are you trying to get rid of? |
| re: :update: Anyone actualy run a vintage system? | Night Wolf Mar 19, 2003 3:45 PM | | do you mean the receivers?
if so, then I am going to be selling my Sansui G-7700 and my other 9090DB |
| re: :update: Anyone actualy run a vintage system? | agtpunx40 Mar 19, 2003 3:53 PM | | I may be inerested in the 9090db, if you decide to sell it. My email's wfostr@wm.edu

| re: :update: Anyone actualy run a vintage system? | Toasted Almond Mar 22, 2003 6:43 AM | | I have two pair of KLH Model 6's, and just sold a pair of 17's.
The Model 6 began its life as a 12" two-way, and finished up its production run downsized to a 10" woofer. Examples with 3 binding posts are earlier models than the ones with only two. While they ARE out there, every Model 6 I have ever owned, which includes 4 or 5 pair (one pair since new in 1974), have all been 10" woofers. The 12"ers are rare finds. The original KLH company made very few products that were not outstanding performers for the $.
